Getting started

What is TellyHear?

TellyHear is an Australian hearing aid company that lets you compare and buy genuine hearing aids online while still getting audiologist-led fitting and support. The idea is to combine transparent online pricing and at-home convenience with proper help before and after your hearing aids arrive.

Learn how TellyHear works

Is an audiologist actually involved?

Yes, and the same one every time. Lachlan Smith is a Senior Clinical Audiologist with a Master of Clinical Audiology from the University of Melbourne, a full member of Audiology Australia, 15 years in clinical practice and more than 10,000 patients fitted. He reviews your audiogram, programs the hearing aids before they ship, runs the fitting over video and handles the adjustments afterwards. You are not being sent an unopened box to work out alone.

How do I get started?

If you already have a recent audiogram, the most useful first step is to have it ready and get in touch so it can be reviewed. If you do not, you can complete the suitability quiz or contact the team, and we will explain what you need next.

Check my suitability

Do I need a hearing test before buying hearing aids?

You can browse, compare prices and ask questions without a hearing test. For a proper recommendation and fitting though, Lachlan needs real hearing information rather than guessing what your ears need. A standard audiogram from a qualified hearing professional is the best information to provide.

What if I do not have an audiogram?

That is fine. You can still explore the range and speak with the team, and we can explain how to arrange a hearing test and what information will be needed before your hearing aids are fitted. An online screening does not replace a diagnostic audiogram for fitting.

Contact the team

Why does TellyHear need my audiogram?

An audiogram maps how much hearing you have lost at each frequency, and it is almost never the same in both ears. That chart is what Lachlan programs the hearing aids to, so speech sits where you can hear it instead of everything simply being louder. Without one we would be guessing. It is also worth sending because a recent hearing test takes $500 off a pair.

Buying online & fitting

Is it safe to buy hearing aids online?

Buying online can work very well when the device is backed by proper hearing information, fitting and follow-up. TellyHear is not a box-only store: the hearing aids are supported by an audiologist-led fitting process and ongoing help where appropriate. It is not the right path for absolutely everyone, and Lachlan may suggest another approach if your needs call for it.

How does buying hearing aids online with TellyHear work?

It is a simple process: choose a hearing aid or ask us for help choosing, provide your hearing information or audiogram, place your order, receive the hearing aids at home, then complete your fitting and adjustments with Lachlan and the team. Support continues after your devices arrive.

See how it works

Can hearing aids really be fitted remotely?

For many suitable customers, yes. Hearing aids can be programmed around your hearing information and then fine-tuned after you have used them in real situations such as conversations, television, restaurants and phone calls. Remote fitting is not appropriate in every case, so Lachlan may recommend another approach if your hearing or ear health needs it.

How does the remote fitting appointment work?

Your hearing aids are delivered to you and the team guides you through fitting and using them from home. Lachlan can then help refine the settings based on what you are actually hearing in everyday life. There is no special hardware you need to buy for this.

Can my hearing aids be adjusted after the first fitting?

Yes, where the hearing aid and your situation support remote adjustments. If things sound too sharp, too soft, too loud or unclear, the settings can often be refined once you have had time to use the devices in everyday situations. The first fitting does not have to be the final setting.

Do I ever need to visit a clinic?

Not necessarily. A lot of TellyHear's care can be provided remotely for suitable customers. In-person care may be more appropriate if there are complex ear-health concerns, a need for physical examination, or another reason Lachlan recommends seeing someone in person.

Can I see Lachlan in person?

Yes. TellyHear is built around remote care because it reaches people anywhere in Australia, but Lachlan also runs clinics in Melbourne and in-person appointments in Moonee Ponds may be available. It is the same audiologist and the same standard of care either way, so you can start remotely and come in later, or the reverse. Contact the team to check current availability and book a time.

Choosing your hearing aids

Which hearing aid is best?

There is no single best hearing aid, which is why we do not publish a winner. The right choice depends on your audiogram, the situations you actually struggle in, the style that suits your ears, and your budget. Someone who mainly wants the TV clearer needs something different from someone in noisy restaurants several nights a week. Send us your hearing test and Lachlan will narrow the range down to the two or three models that genuinely fit your situation.

Compare hearing aids

How do I know which hearing aid is right for me?

The team looks at your hearing information together with the situations that matter to you. Someone who mainly needs help with television and one-on-one conversation may have very different needs from someone regularly dealing with restaurants, meetings and background noise. The suitability quiz or an audiogram review is the best starting point.

Check my suitability

What is the difference between Essential, Advanced and Premium hearing aids?

As a broad guide: Essential models are often suitable for simpler everyday environments such as home, television and one-on-one conversation. Advanced models suit people who regularly move between home, family gatherings, cafes and other mixed environments. Premium models offer the strongest technology for demanding settings such as restaurants, groups and background noise. The technology level alone does not decide what is right for you. Your hearing test and individual needs still matter.

Can hearing aids help in restaurants and background noise?

Restaurants are the hardest test for any hearing aid, and it is the main thing the technology level changes. Essential models from $1,690 handle quiet rooms and one-to-one conversation well. Advanced models from $2,190 add directional processing that favours the voice in front of you. Elite models from $2,995 use the newest AI chips to separate speech from crowd noise. Results still vary by person and by room, so we will not promise perfect hearing in noise.

Do your hearing aids work with iPhone or Android?

Most current models stream directly to both iPhone and Android, though Android support depends on your handset supporting Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids. Calls, music and video then play through the hearing aids themselves, and the manufacturer app lets you change volume and programs from your phone. Each product page lists connectivity for that model, or send us your phone model and we will confirm before you order.

Are your hearing aids rechargeable?

Most of the models TellyHear sells are rechargeable, and a smaller number of styles still use disposable batteries. A rechargeable pair sits in its charging case overnight and is ready for a full day when you wake up, which suits anyone who finds the tiny disposable batteries fiddly to change. The individual product page states which type each hearing aid uses, so you can check before you order.

Can I stream phone calls or music through my hearing aids?

Most current hearing aids stream audio directly from a phone, so calls, music, podcasts and video come through the hearing aids themselves rather than a speaker. Support does vary by model and by whether you use an iPhone or Android, and some ranges also stream from a TV using a separate transmitter. Each product page lists the connectivity for that specific model, and we can confirm compatibility with your phone before you order.

Are these genuine hearing aids or cheap amplifiers?

These are genuine medical-grade hearing aids from eight established manufacturers, including Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, Widex, Signia, ReSound, Unitron and Beltone, not the personal sound amplifiers sold online without a prescription. An amplifier makes everything louder. A hearing aid is programmed to the specific frequencies you have lost, so speech comes forward and background noise does not. Every device is covered by a 3-year manufacturer warranty and a 45-day return period.

Pricing & price beat

Why are TellyHear's prices lower than many clinics?

TellyHear uses a remote-first model, which reduces some of the overhead associated with a traditional clinic-heavy service. That lets us keep pricing competitive while still including audiologist-led fitting and support.

Do you price match other hearing aid providers?

TellyHear offers a 5% price beat on eligible comparable offers for the same hearing aid from another Australian provider. We need to verify the hearing aid, provider, advertised or quoted price and the terms of the competing offer before confirming the price beat.

What do you need for a price-beat request?

Send the exact model, the price, the Australian provider and a screenshot, quote or link showing the offer. We check it is genuinely comparable, meaning the same model and tier with equivalent fitting and aftercare included, then beat that price by 5%. It applies to stocked devices from any of the eight brands we carry, and the check usually takes less than one business day.

Is the price shown for one hearing aid or a pair?

Every price on the site is for one hearing aid, not a pair. Most hearing loss affects both ears, so a typical quote is double the figure shown, and prices run from $1,690 to $4,300 per aid across 56 models. Each price already includes programming to your audiogram, remote fitting, follow-up adjustments, a 45-day return period and a 3-year warranty. Send us your audiogram and we will quote the exact total for your situation.

Delivery, returns & warranty

Do you ship hearing aids anywhere in Australia?

Yes. TellyHear ships Australia-wide, including regional and remote addresses, with free tracked delivery on every order. Most orders arrive within 7 days, and you get the tracking details by email so you can follow the parcel to your door. Because the fitting is done remotely over video, you do not need a clinic nearby to be looked after properly.

How long does it take to ship my hearing aids?

We guarantee your hearing aids are shipped within 7 days. That is a shipping timeframe rather than a guaranteed delivery date, since transit time after dispatch depends on the courier and where you are in Australia. Tracking is provided so you can follow your order.

How do I track an existing order?

Every order gets tracking details by email once it ships, usually within a few days of your fitting being prepared. If you cannot find that email or want an update, contact the team with your name and order number and we will check where the parcel is. Most orders arrive within 7 days of dispatch on free tracked shipping.

What if my hearing aids do not suit me?

TellyHear provides a 45-day money-back period so you can use your hearing aids in everyday life and work through adjustments with the team. If they still are not right for you, they can be returned within the eligible return period, provided they are not damaged and the return meets the applicable terms.

Do I get a warranty?

Every hearing aid comes with a 3-year manufacturer warranty, and that is on top of the 45-day return period where you can send them back for a full refund if they are not right. The warranty covers device faults. Contact the team and we will handle the manufacturer process for you rather than leaving you to chase it. Coverage is subject to the manufacturer’s warranty terms.

What happens if something goes wrong after I buy?

Support does not stop when the parcel arrives. Get in touch and we will work out whether it is the fitting, the settings, the connectivity or an actual device fault. Programming and comfort issues are fixed remotely with Lachlan at no cost. A genuine hardware fault goes through the 3-year manufacturer warranty, and within the first 45 days you can simply return the hearing aids for a full refund.

Payments, funding & rebates

Can I pay for hearing aids in instalments?

Eligible customers may be able to spread the cost using payment options available through TellyHear's checkout. Available providers, limits, repayment schedules and eligibility vary, so check our Payment Plans page for the current options.

View payment plans

Which payment-plan providers do you offer?

Depending on the order and your eligibility, payment options may include Afterpay, Zip, Klarna and humm. The exact options available to you are shown through the applicable checkout, and each is subject to the provider's own approval and terms.

View payment plans

Does TellyHear decide whether I am approved for a payment plan?

No. TellyHear does not assess or approve finance. Afterpay, Klarna, Zip and humm each run their own application and set their own limits, so approval, the amount available and the repayment terms are decided by that provider under its own terms, not by us. If an application is declined we can still help you look at the Hearing Services Program, DVA, NDIS or a private health rebate instead.

Can I use private health insurance for hearing aids?

Often yes, if your Extras cover includes hearing aids. What you get back depends on your fund, your level of cover, any waiting period, and when you last claimed, since hearing aid benefits usually reset on a multi-year cycle rather than annually. Ask your fund for your current available benefit rather than a published maximum, and we will provide the paperwork you need to claim. Our private health rebates page lists what a number of Australian funds pay.

Learn about private health rebates

Can I use private health insurance and a payment plan together?

Potentially. If your Extras policy includes an eligible hearing aid benefit, you may be able to claim according to your fund's rules even when using an eligible payment method. Confirm the claiming requirements with your health fund before purchasing.

Can I use the Hearing Services Program or HSP?

The Australian Government Hearing Services Program subsidises hearing aids for eligible pensioners and concession card holders, and DVA Gold Card holders are generally fully funded. Eligibility, the devices available and the claiming process are set by the program rather than by us, and the fully subsidised range is narrower than our full catalogue. Check our funding page or contact the team before ordering so you do not pay for something you could have claimed.

NDIS & Hearing Services Program

Can I use NDIS funding for hearing aids?

NDIS funding may cover hearing aids for eligible participants, and it usually depends on three things: whether hearing supports sit in your plan, which budget they come from, and whether your plan is self-managed, plan-managed or agency-managed. Self-managed and plan-managed participants generally have the most flexibility in where they buy. Read our NDIS guide or talk to the team before you order so the paperwork is right the first time.

Aftercare & family support

Will you still help me after the hearing aids arrive?

Yes, and this is the part most people underestimate. Almost nobody is perfectly tuned on day one: hearing aids usually need two or three adjustments over the first few weeks as your ears adapt. Those fine-tunes happen over video with Lachlan and continue for as long as you wear the devices, at no extra cost. If something does not sound right, contact us rather than assuming you have to live with it.

Can a family member help me?

Yes. It is common for a partner, son, daughter or another family member to help compare hearing aids, organise a hearing test, provide information or assist during setup. Where health information is involved, we respect the customer's consent and privacy.

Can I buy hearing aids for my mum or dad?

Yes, and a lot of our orders are arranged this way. Family members can handle the research, the ordering and the paperwork, and you are welcome to sit in on the video fitting to help. The one thing that cannot be delegated is the fitting itself: the person who will wear the hearing aids needs a recent hearing test, and needs to be present so Lachlan can tune the devices to their hearing and check the fit is comfortable.

What if I have trouble setting up the hearing aids or app?

Contact the team and we will walk you through it. Most first-week problems are one of three things: Bluetooth pairing, the charging contacts not seating properly, or the volume and program controls. We can usually sort those on a video call in a few minutes, and if it turns out to be a fitting issue Lachlan will re-tune the hearing aids remotely rather than asking you to send them back.

Hearing health & safety

How do I know whether I might need hearing aids?

Common signs include struggling to follow conversations in background noise, regularly asking people to repeat themselves, turning the television up, having difficulty on the phone, or hearing a voice but missing parts of the words. These are a reason to have your hearing assessed, not a diagnosis on their own.

Can TellyHear diagnose my hearing loss from the website?

No. Website information and online screening tools can help you understand the next step, but they do not replace an appropriate clinical hearing assessment where one is required. Lachlan and the team can review the hearing information you provide and guide you on the hearing-aid process.
